Framework of Reservation in Indian Government Recruitments
Reservation in central government jobs is governed by constitutional provisions and Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) guidelines. Understanding category criteria ensures candidates claim entitled benefits accurately without application invalidation.
Quota Breakdown in Central Government Direct Recruitment
- Scheduled Castes (SC): 15% quota
- Scheduled Tribes (ST): 7.5% quota
- Other Backward Classes (OBC-NCL): 27% quota
- Economically Weaker Sections (EWS): 10% quota
- Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD): 4% horizontal reservation
- Ex-Servicemen (ESM): Horizontal reservation in Group C and Group D posts
EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) Criteria

Exclusions: Families owning 5 acres of agricultural land, or residential flat of 1000 sq ft, or residential plot of 100 sq yards in notified municipalities are excluded from EWS benefits.
OBC Non-Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL) Guidelines
To claim OBC reservation, the candidate must belong to a caste included in the Central List of OBCs AND must not belong to the "Creamy Layer". The annual family income ceiling for Non-Creamy Layer status is ₹8.00 Lakh per annum (excluding income from Agriculture and Salary as specified in DoPT rules).
